12 best tips to care for your silk garments

1. Use Hand Wash if Possible

  • Use Cold Water: Fill a basin with cold water.

  • Mild Detergent: Add a small amount of mild detergent or silk-specific soap.

  • Gentle Agitation: Gently swirl the garment for a few minutes.


2. Very gentle Machine Wash

  • Delicate Cycle: Use the delicate or silk cycle.

  • Mesh Bag: Place the garment in a mesh laundry bag.

  • Cold Water: Always use cold water.

3. Do not use a dryer machine

  • No Wringing: Gently press out excess water.

  • Air Dry: Lay flat on a clean, dry towel or hang in a shaded area.

  • Avoid Sunlight: Direct sunlight can cause fading.


4. Use very low iron heat

  • Low Heat: Use the lowest heat setting on your iron.

  • Inside Out: Turn the garment inside out.

  • Use a Cloth: Place a thin cloth between the iron and the silk.

5. Proper Storage Rooms

  • Cool, Dry Place: Store in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight.

  • Hanging: Use padded hangers to avoid stretching.

  • Avoid Plastic: Store in breathable cotton garment bags.

6. Do not leave stains hanging

  • Do not leave stains hanging!! Treat immediately.

  • Blot, Don’t Rub: Blot the stain gently with a clean, damp cloth.

  • Mild Detergent: Use a small amount of mild detergent on the stain.

  • Rinse: Rinse with cold water and air dry.


7. Dry Clean Silk (check your labels)

  • For delicate or heavily soiled items, yes.

  • Check Labels: Follow care label instructions.

  • Trusted Cleaners: Use a reputable dry cleaner experienced with silk.


8. Use Hair dryer to dry your silk (if needed)

  • Not the most professional. But it works

  • Best if you need your garments on the day.

  • Hnag on a hanger and use the lowest heat on the ahir dryer.

11. Use very eco friendly soap/detergent

Make sure to check the chemical content of the detergent

12. Use natural air ventilation

  • Allow natural air exposed and protected from sunlight to pass through the silk

  • This will get rid the smell dirt and grim

  • Find the best time to hang your silk garments (in Malaysia, best time is 10am till 12pm. Anything after that is too hot)
